The Bowlus Fine Arts and Cultural Center enhances the life of the regional community by nurturing a love of the arts; generating cultural and economic vitality; and providing spaces to experience and create educational, entertaining, and innovative live performances.

HISTORY
During his final illness in 1960, Iola citizen and banker Thomas H. Bowlus wrote a will directing that his estate be used to build and equip a fine arts center. The mission of the center is defined in the will as ''to broaden the cultural background of area youth and make available to the citizens of the area facilities, programs and entertainments not otherwise available.''

The Center opened its doors in the fall of 1964, with Kansas City Mayor, H. Roe Bartle as the featured speaker at the grand opening and dedication. A few weeks later the Kansas City Philharmonic performed the first major concert in the new auditorium. Since its opening, the Bowlus Center has become an organization of regional significance and a sought after venue for touring artists.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are community volunteers appointed by judges to advocate on behalf of children who have experienced abuse or neglect. These trained volunteers work with legal and child welfare professionals, educators and service providers to ensure judges have all the information they need to make the most well-informed decisions for each child. They represent the best interest of these children and are their voice in court. Advocates stay with the case until it is closed with the child in a safe, permanent home where they have the opportunity to thrive.

A Nice Place to Live” is what is says on the sign on US Hwy 54 in Southeastern Kansas. The large majority of the population of seven hundred and fifty agree. LaHarpe is one of the older towns in the area. It was platted in 1885 as a stop on the St. Louis, Fort Scott and Wichita Railroad. It was named after LaHarpe, Illinois for the simple reason that the engineer on the first train through here lived in LaHarpe, Illinois. The town grew modestly to serve farmers until the Lanyon Smelting Company built a zinc smelter here, creating hundreds of jobs.
